Come Discover USC! During my last check out to the Metro DC area we worked at one of our Discover USC programs. We host these programs for prospective pupils throughout the world making sure that students and families gain helpful information about USC and our application process. We realize it’s just not feasible, so we try our best to bring a bit of USC to you although we would love for everyone to visit USC!

During Discover programs we hope to present ourselves as professional and organized. That generally means we appear extra-early, run around like crazy people making certain the brochures we sent in advance have arrived, curse at non-functioning technology, and also have the resort manager’s quantity on speed dial. Luckily for me personally, this amount of time in D.C., there clearly was no digging through offices and mail rooms to locate our boxes of materials, our Power Point miraculously worked, and we were prepared to go ahead of the first family arrived (there is always one that arrives at least a half hour early!) We realize that families spend a lot of time information that is attending, touring campuses, and filling out applications, so you want to make sure we are supplying the most readily useful information into the most efficient way at all our activities. We usually likewise have some wonderful USC alums lend hand when they are available. I constantly question my life choices when I pay attention to just what our alums are up to. Legislation school at Georgetown…working for the CIA….no big deal.

I was scheduled to speak briefly at this program. A big element of my work is speaking in public; we give presentations to high school students in auditoriums, classrooms, and career centers on a regular basis. So I am generally very comfortable talking to a group. That stuff doesn’t anymore faze me. Nevertheless, put me in a hotel ball space aided by the Dean of Admission (my boss’s boss’s employer) and get me to speak, and I also’ll feel a bit stressed ( merely a tad!)

It was great to see a few familiar faces of students I had met at high schools that week. I talked with one household who had driven about four hours to go to! Although we loved that the family was here, please don’t believe you’ve got to make that sacrifice. If we aren’t coming to a city in your area, please feel free to simply let your admission counselor understand that you would like more information but can’t attend a Discover system.

As soon as our presentation that is formal is there is an opportunity to inquire and hear from admission counselors from academic divisions. Pupils can split into groups according to specialized niche and have major related questions as well. I heard from numerous families who were having their first experience with USC that evening. Several other moms and dads shared they had already been to USC, but they learned something new which somehow changed their perspective on the college application process or about USC with me that. I also talked with a parent who appeared to have some information that is outdated USC or had accumulated some information based on somebody else’s experience. This is a great possibility for parents to recharge their knowledge and learn about present day USC.

Among the final, and another of my favorite, comments I been aware of the evening was ‘now I understand why everyone else has plenty school spirit!’ A job well done on our component.

Whenever we are visiting a town towards you, or if you’ll be in Los Angeles on November 22nd, please come visit us at Discover USC! Maybe you will learn something new…you never know!

Mythbuster: the SAT can be taken by me or ACT right before the admission due date

The Myth: we can take the SAT or ACT prior to the admission due date and it will be fine.

The Verdict: Not an idea that is great. The test may not make it into the application with time for review.

With our December 1 deadline approaching, it really is almost that time of year when our office is sent thousands of applications, transcripts, test scores and letters of recommendation. Honestly, it is amazing that every thing gets placed into each and every student’s application file given the volume that is high of we receive.

It really is essential to realize that it takes a significant amount of time for all application materials become organized and downloaded in to a pupil’s application file- especially test scores. Think about this. SAT and ACT offer certain test times and times. Then they have to score those tests, deliver you your rating, and then send the score to all the colleges on your list. This takes a lot of time on the end, plus it takes weeks that are several our end to download and process the scores.

It can take up to two weeks from the moment the test is scored to be downloaded into your application file if you take a standardized test right before the admission deadline. That might be far too late. Our staff has from 1 until early January to review ALL the applications submitted by our December 1 merit scholarship deadline december. We shall accept scores that are submitted after the deadline, but consider we require official test scores before we can review a student’s application.

You shall also want to ensure that you arrange for all of one’s other application materials to be sent on time. Your school is extremely busy at this time of year because they send transcripts to hundreds of colleges. On top of grading tests and papers, your teachers are writing letters of suggestion for you by themselves time. You shall wish to give everyone advance notice of admission due dates so when they should submit materials in your behalf. Your instructors and counselors will actually be thankful! Them plenty of time, they will be able to get us your transcript in a timely manner and write thoughtful recommendations if you give.

You shall manage to always check on the application materials during your portal. Just remember you submit won’t show up on your portal instantly that we are processing hundreds of thousands of documents, so any application pieces. Please wait a few business days before calling us if it appears like something is missing.

Application processing is really a huge task with a lot of moving parts. The ship will sail efficiently if students be mindful of their application materials ahead of time, and at the same time things can get rocky and fall through the cracks if documents and materials are sent late. We thank you in advance for being courteous and submitting all of your application materials on time!
