On December 19, a reddit post about our Canadian Hijab went viral, receiving over 1700 upvotes and nearly 900 comments across four different subreddits.
The post read:
Some guy from Toronto made a Canadian themed hijab after that Mosque was burned down and a lady was attacked for wearing a Hijab. He’s raising money for Syrian refugees too. Kind of weird, not sure if I love it or hate it but can’t blame the guy for trying. Google “canadian project scarf”
What followed next was an assortment of comments ranging from beautiful Canadian poetry to pure ignorant bigotry. Lets check out some of the favourites.
Many comments were removed due to their extremely terrible content, but here are some in moderation.
And then just when the redditor’s were about to give up hope in humanity, BinaryFormatter hit a home run!
All in all, it was remarkable to see the amount of communication resulting from these posts. I believe these types of conversations are exactly what we need to be having in order to remedy cultural intolerance inbred from misinformation. We hope to be able to continue creating conversations like this that will allow people to come to their own informed conclusions rather than accepting misinformation passed down from the few fear mongering Canadians.
Oh yeah… this guy hates his pants
